WOMEN'S HEALTH: IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE, DO IT YOURSELF
As part of Spark’s Stronger Not Smaller campaign this month, we joined forces with the radiant Rachel Mason, founder of the women-focussed wellness brand, Our Remedy. The Reels-swiping girlies among you will have seen our stuff on socials over the last few days, exposing some shocking healthcare inequalities that women still face today (watch Rachel spill the tea here) but for those who’d love to hear more about Rachel and her inspiring mission, we caught up with her to bring you this personal interview…
Q: What inspired you to create Our Remedy?
A: My journey with women’s health has been a challenging one. I’ve faced infertility, a rare type of ovarian cancer, and underwent a full hysterectomy by the age of 30, which forced me into menopause. During this time, I turned to natural remedies to support my health and started a blog to share my experiences. I realised there was a huge gap in accessible, relatable information about women’s health—especially around hysterectomies and the role of supplements in recovery.
As I connected with other women, it became clear that I wasn’t alone in feeling overwhelmed by the supplement industry: confusing dosages, unappealing branding, and wasteful packaging were common frustrations. I wanted to create something different—a brand that was planet-friendly, beautifully designed to appeal to women, and easy to incorporate into daily routines. Our Remedy isn’t just about supplements; it’s about empowering women to take charge of their health in a way that feels approachable and supportive.
Q: How do you approach developing supplements that specifically cater to women’s needs?
A: Our Remedy is designed with women’s reproductive health in mind, addressing issues like period cramps, PMS, and menopause symptoms. Each product in our range is intentionally simple, with a clear daily dosage—one tablet or drop a day—because I know how confusing supplement routines can be.
Beyond functionality, our branding is created to resonate with women. The products are meant to be displayed like a favourite perfume, and not hidden away in a cupboard. This visibility helps make taking supplements a consistent part of your routine—because let’s face it, we often forget to do the things that benefit us the most.
Q: Are there glaring gaps in the wellness industry that Our Remedy addresses?
A: One major gap is the lack of female-led brands in the women’s health space. It’s shocking how often these products are developed without input from women who’ve actually experienced the health challenges they claim to address. As someone who’s been through infertility, cancer, and menopause, I’ve used my personal experiences to create a brand that truly understands and supports women.
Another gap is sustainability. Most supplements come in plastic pots that are only partially filled—an unnecessary waste. At Our Remedy, we prioritise sustainability, using eco-friendly materials and making choices that are better for the planet. I’m not a big corporate brand focused on profits; I’m a person who genuinely cares about people and the environment.
Q: Tell us a shocking health/wellness inequality faced by women.
A: Women’s health issues are often dismissed or overlooked by the medical community. For example, conditions like endometriosis or PCOS can take years to diagnose, leaving women to suffer in silence. This lack of urgency and understanding is unacceptable and highlights a deeper inequality in how women’s pain is perceived and treated.
Q: What impact do you want Our Remedy to have on the world?
A: I want Our Remedy to empower women to explore natural alternatives for their health. It’s about showing that you don’t always have to rely on prescription medications, which can sometimes have long-term side effects. While natural remedies may require some trial and error, they can offer gentle and effective support.
I also want to create a community for women who’ve faced life-changing health diagnoses. I’m developing a support platform where women can connect with mentors who’ve been through similar experiences. When I was going through my health challenges, I felt incredibly alone, and I want to ensure no woman feels that way. My ultimate goal is to make a meaningful difference in women’s lives, one step at a time.
Q: How does feminism influence your approach to running your business?
A: Feminism is at the heart of what I do. Women are underrepresented in business, receive less funding, and are often overlooked—and that drives me to work harder. I dream of building an all-female team and partnering with female investors to challenge these norms. Representation matters, and I want Our Remedy to show that women can lead, innovate, and succeed in male-dominated spaces.
Q: What are some myths about women’s health or wellness that you aim to challenge through Our Remedy?
A: One big myth is that prescription medication is the only solution for health challenges. I’m not a doctor, and I’m not here to replace medical advice, but I believe we need to consider natural solutions as a first step. Too often, women are given medications without being fully informed about their side effects or alternative options.
Q: How would you like Our Remedy to impact women’s health and wellness in the long term?
A: I want Our Remedy to change how women approach their health—encouraging them to trust their intuition, explore natural solutions, and take proactive steps to feel their best. Long term, I hope to see a shift in the wellness industry, where women’s voices and experiences are valued and reflected in the products available to us.
Q: Are there any women in your personal life or career who have had a massive impact on your journey?
A: Yes, absolutely. Brianna Wiest has been a huge inspiration—her books have guided me through so many challenges. She has a way of putting life’s complexities into perspective, and I often turn to her writing for clarity and motivation.
I’m also inspired by female founders of all kinds. No matter how small their businesses might seem, they remind me that if they can do it, so can I. I intentionally follow women who inspire me to keep pushing forward.
Q: Who’s your feminist role model?
A: Brianna Wiest is one of them, for her incredible ability to empower through her writing. But beyond that, I’m inspired by the everyday women who are breaking barriers in business, wellness, and beyond. Representation matters, and these women remind me that the sky’s the limit.
Q: What does self-care look like for you as a founder, and how do you practice what you preach?
A: Self-care is a work in progress for me, but I’m learning. I make sure to take my supplements daily, limit my screen time, and turn off my phone by 9 p.m. to focus on meditation, reading, and skincare. Walks in nature are non-negotiable for my mental health and productivity—I schedule them into my day, and they help me reset and recharge.
