It’s the month of loooove, Sparklers! Galentine’s Day is coming up (yay!) and with the New Moon in Aquarius, the timing couldn't be better. This time is all about focusing on platonic love, reaching out to those in your circle and nurturing your friendships. It’s also a great moment for new beginnings, maybe trying a new hobby with your bestie? FINALLY going to that place you keep sending each other TikTok videos of?
ARIES:
Now Aries, we know you THRIVE on independence, but this month is showing big reunion energy. So it’s best to keep an open mind and discern when (and who) you can welcome back with open arms. The Sun enters Pisces this month, which will help you cultivate empathy, wisdom and selfless love. Now we’re definitely not saying unblock your ex, but we ARE saying rekindling old friendships can be a beautiful thing.
TAURUS:
With Galentine’s on the horizon, take a moment to think about who’s really in your village. Things can feel a little hectic this month, with erratic Mars moving into Aquarius. But have no fear, your grounded energy combined with the support of those around you, and you’ll barely feel it. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your network and you’ll be achieving your goals with ease! We love to see it!
CAPRICORN:
Oh Cap, if you aren’t the best friend to those around you, we don’t know who is! You are loved and relied upon greatly, but if it begins to take a toll, don’t be afraid to set boundaries or try something new to spend time with your loved ones. Communication will be smooth for you this month. So why not try celebrating yourself AND those who you care about with a bit of TLC? (the band, or a spa day, up to you!)
SCORPIO:
It’s giving rom-com marathon with your fam vibes for you, Scorpio. And unapologetically so. We see you surrounded by love and family, it’s a good time to check in and get some quality time going! Whether it be your actual relatives, or your chosen family, it will be everything you (or they) need. With Mercury in Aquarius, you can take advantage of the fresh ways of thinking and maybe the inevitable deep chats will lead to brand new ideas! How exciting!
LIBRA:
All we can think about is Libra surrounded by plushies right now, the energy is TOO CUTE. Let February be a time for sweetness, nurture your inner child with aaaall the love and have some fun. You’ll be ticking off tasks and goals with ease, so you better bask in the joy to celebrate! Cosy up to the lovey dovey vibes of this month, and whether alone or with loved ones, don’t forget the little treats! You deserve them.
LEO:
Ooooh, the vibes are feeling fiery and creative right now, Leo. You might have been feeling a little stuck, but with the New Moon in Aquarius, now’s the time to work it all out. A fresh mindset and trying something new could really bring you out of a creative rut! Now, we know you love to be social, so this is the PERFECT opportunity to join a group. Or do something creative with your friends! We’re already jealous of your Galentine’s date.
SAGITTARIUS:
Self care, self care, self care. Do we need to say it again? Remember, this is the month of love, Sag. SELF LOVE INCLUDED! Take a moment right now to think about what will really reeeeally get you relaxed… that is what you need to plan. Whether it be a solo trip, a girls trip or a free for all, indulge in some fun! It will make it all the easier for you to care for yourself (and others, by proxy).
GEMINI:
With the New Moon in Aquarius, you could be feeling a bit up in the air this month, Gemini. You’ll be day-dreaming and fantasising about that perfect way to unwind, but let’s get all of the responsibilities out of the way first. With the full moon in Virgo at the end of the month, that’s when we’re aiming for. It’ll be the best time to ground yourself in that earth energy, and let go of everything you’ve been carrying for the month of Feb. Plan ahead, and get something romantic in the diary to look forward to!
PISCES:
With Mercury in Pisces at the end of the month, it’s time to unpack all of the thoughts and feelings that have been floating around that beautiful mind. You might be feeling more sensitive and emotional, and that’s okay. Whatever your outlet is, don’t feel guilty spending more time leaning into it and getting everything out. We know everybody is obsessed with being social this month, but it’s okay to prioritise yourself and have some solo time. Treating yourself the way you would treat a loved one is everything you need.
CANCER:
Okay, we know it’s not the first month of the year, but creativity and out of the box thinking will be strong in Aquarius season. So if you haven’t already, get to planning and mood boarding, it’ll be better than ever! And with the romance (self love and little treats, obvs) in the air, you might even be able to tick off some of the things you’d love to do. Especially if it’s something new, the New Moon in Aquarius would LOVE that! And will reward you for doing so.
VIRGO:
Okay Virgo, it’s Aquarius season. Do. Not. Panic. We know you love to be grounded, you earth signs keep 10 toes on the ground at all times. But now is the time to try and go with the flow. Really test those spontaneous muscles. With social plans and new things to do in the back of your mind, you never know how great it could go if you just say yes! Think: balance. The planets are aligned to support you in whatever it is that takes you out of your comfort zone.
AQUARIUS:
Happy Birthday, Aquarius! It’s YOUR season! And you better not let anyone forget it. You’ll be the life of the party, obvs. Your New Moon will bring every opportunity to get everyone together, try new things and support each other through it all. With all the beautiful chaos it brings, don’t forget to take time for yourself and indulge in self care when you need to. Okay, we’ll compromise, you can bring some loved ones along too. But let yourself CHILL.

]]>Studies say women of all ages are becoming obsessed with the true crime genre. Whether it’s a craving for the truth, a hunger for justice, or, as our favourite Bloody Mabel says in Only Murders In The Building; you watch true crime to find out how not to end up on true crime, the stats show that we’re twice as likely to love it as men…
A couple of years ago our editor Laura wrote about this phenomenon for The Nag, and, to coincide with our latest product drop, we’ve done some more highly scientific research (read: asking the Spark team) and come up with a few more thoughts on why we love true crime so bloody much:
The High Priestess
Ah, the intuitive High Priestess! Depicted as the always-inspiring Frida Kahlo, because you are a GODDESS! Artistic, spiritual and wise, you are a supportive force for those around you. You are called to delve deep into your divine feminine, and connect to your wisdom, expression and creativity at this time.
The Warrior
You WARRIOR! Life has been tough for you at times, precious warrior, but you fight your battles with grace and determination. You really are a badass! You motivate and inspire those around you to never give up. Take this time to appreciate what you’ve done and how far you’ve come! Treat yourself to some serious self-care, you deserve it!
The Suffragette
The Suffragette, the boots on the ground campaigner, the one who stands up for everything that’s right. We thank you. You are fearless and never afraid to fight the patriarchy. Today, think about how proud you should be of yourself and all the good you put out into the world. And don’t forget to pour some of that goodness back into yourself, too!
The World
Oh, The World can be such a scary place sometimes, but you do everything you can to take care of it as much as possible. The nurturing protector, we see how much you do. You see things from a much broader perspective, thinking about how all of the small things we do can add up to something much greater. Take a step inwards today and nurture your own inner world, it’s okay.
The Witch
The Witch, dark and a little mysterious, we are captivated by your allure. You love the unknown and have an inspiring faith in the Universe. You can manifest anything, absolutely anything, you want, so what will it be today? Spend some time appreciating your gifts. Cleanse your space and indulge in your rituals. Your energy is powerful and needs to be nurtured.
The Judge
Who else would we choose to depict The Judge but the legendary Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We think you just might be the original boss! Career-driven and completely unstoppable, you lead the way for those around you. A true inspiration. Take some time today and slow down in your own way. Does your vision board need updating? We know you’ve ticked off half of those goals already!
The Lovers
Ah, The Lovers. To be surrounded by love is one of the greatest joys we get to experience. And to love with a true heart makes it all the more powerful. What does showing love look like to you? Take a moment today to remember all the beautiful ways in which you show love. Celebrate the devotion you give and the courage it takes to love so freely.
The Icon
She’s an ICON! We can almost feel you sparkling through the screen. There’s a lot of main character energy here, the spotlight is on you. And this is your time to step fully into your power. You know you need to focus on you, do what makes YOU happy and really soak up that joy. Remember: never let anyone dim your light! You. Are. Everything.
It’s coming up to the witchy season, Sparklers! Now’s the time to start winding down the madness of the sun. The summer has come to an end and we step into Virgo season ready to cozy down into that big earth energy. We start the month with Venus retrograde coming to an end (yay!) and a swift move into Jupiter retrograde. With that in mind, it’s the ideal time for reflection and planning.
ARIES:
We think you’ll love this season, Aries. With the ambition that you wield, lack of motivation isn’t even in your vocab. You’ll jump head first into planning the fine details of your future and not leave any rock unturned. Now’s a perfect time to look back over the summer and think about what you truly loved and what was just a summer fling (overly complicated juice cleanse, we’re looking at you).
TAURUS:
Taurus, Taurus, Taurus. You’ve done so much. As much as people love to misunderstand your stubbornness, they can’t deny that it goes hand in hand with the perseverance to reach your goals. And you’ve been reaching them quicker than we can reach for our tarot cards. In the spirit of Venus, now is a good time to stop and think about where you are with these goals, re-evaluate and get back at it.
CAPRICORN:
Now Capricorn, we know how serious and determined you are. But we’re so proud of how you’ve let your hair down this summer. You’ve stepped out of your comfort zone, even if it’s just a little, and we see you. Make a list of all the things that brought you joy this summer, and think of ways you can bring that energy with you into this next season. In that list of a million and one things you want to accomplish, be sure to leave some room for fun and ease, too. Have the cocktail, we insist!
SCORPIO:
Oooh Scorpio, you might hate us for this, but we know that you’re ruled by Pluto. And she can be a lil’ destructive at times. So don’t hold back when it comes to reflecting. It’s okay to take some time to pause and breathe. Your personal relationships have been going through the motions, and now you have plenty of space to evaluate and trim the threads. It’s okay to be selfish, it’s okay to make time for yourself and it's MORE than okay to put down firm boundaries.
LIBRA:
We see a sparkle in your eye, Libra. And that sparkle is good fortune. We can’t help but think of Barbie Land, when we think of Libra. Glitter, glamour and gorgeousness. You’ve been killing the game (or soon will be), so make sure you set aside time to breathe. You deserve this life, for life. So how can you ensure things are sustainable? Treat yourself to a new journal, but make sure you use it. Now that’s what we call balance.
LEO:
Who’s that in the spotlight? How could it be anyone other than Leo! We love that you love all eyes on you. Your confidence is deep rooted, it may be hidden from time to time, but remember that it will always be a part of you. Take this time to think about how you truly want to be seen. Whether it’s physically or emotionally, take stock of all the parts that you wish were in the spotlight. As soon as you see them, we will too. And no doubt we’ll love you even more!
SAGITTARIUS:
You’ve been putting in the work, Sag! Your spontaneity is a breath of fresh air, even with all of the energy you’ve spent perfecting your routines, you still manage to keep things fresh. It can get tough at times, but don’t beat yourself up. We love you for you, and all your excitement. If you’re fed up with the daily chores, think about switching from routine to ritual. You don’t have to have your whole day scheduled, but having ritualistic ways to get things done, could be the schedule you’re after.
GEMINI:
If there’s one thing you’re good at, Gemini, it’s fun! You’ve been out and about all summer, and rightly so. One thing we love to see is a Gemini in the sun. And the fun doesn’t end there, it’s just time to bring it indoors (or put on a coat and keep going, we don’t judge). Retrograde brings a tricky energy to our personal relationships, so if there’s anyone you need to cut loose, now’s the time. Pause, reflect and think about who you love spending time with most. TRUST US, it’s for the best.
PISCES:
You’ve been moving like a crazy magician, Pisces, and we love to see it. Your creativity is at an all time high. If you’ve been thinking about learning a new skill, or delving into a new hobby, now’s the time! But wait - don’t speed off to the craft store just yet, remember that good things take time. You might get frustrated, you might want to smush the clay vase that’s giving more phallic than florals. But TRUST. THE. PROCESS. You’ve got this.
CANCER:
If there’s one thing that comes to mind when we think of Cancers, it’s community. You are the masters of bringing people together. Swap picnics in the park for crazy nights at home, and bask in the love that you cultivate. Between all the heart warming joy (honestly, so cute), think about who’s missing? Now’s a perfect time to catch up with friends you’ve not spoken to in a while. Catch up on your summer drama, braid each other's hair, you know, all that mushy stuff.
VIRGO:
VIRGO! It’s YOUR season. Moment of celebration for the Virgos in the room, please. What screams earth sign more than a moment of grounding, reflection and cozy nights of self care. Literally nothing. So with that being said, let’s keep things balanced. We know you love your comfy nights in, but it’s your season! Let your hair down, try something new, have SO much fun. And then you can get back to it. You deserve it.
AQUARIUS:
Will all the Aquarians please stand up. And stand still! You’ve been all over the place this summer, and we’d expect nothing less. With your energetic and eccentric energy, we know winter can be a tough one. You just want to be out! But don’t let the shit weather stop the fun. Make a list of all the people you can be your full crazy self around, and another of all the fun crazy stuff you can get up to! We’re thinking game nights, workshops, dance offs in your kitchen. Let go and let loose!

Not everybody likes a difficult woman. I know this because I am one. And, while it is 2023, the very fact that us women are still made to believe we are ‘difficult’ when our male counterparts are more likely to be described as ‘driven’ is justification for us becoming even more infuriatingly ‘difficult’ than we already are. And no, we shouldn’t be sorry about it.
So what makes me a difficult woman?
Any and all of us who have been made to feel difficult for simply doing our best, sticking to our values or reaching for the stars will no doubt relate. Firstly, when I was having problems with (aka being bullied by) three senior men in the workplace some years ago, I remember being advised by someone to ‘keep my head down’. But when you’re being singled out that isn’t just nigh on impossible to do, it’s also completely and utterly soul destroying. If somebody is making you feel small, why go out of your way to make yourself feel smaller still?
Therapy (paid for by them, ironically), reminded me that I wasn’t ‘small’, I was just in an impossible situation – a dynamic that, unfortunately, my mortgage relied upon. But I did have a choice. I was going to be forced out regardless, and I couldn’t stop them from bullying me (something they seemed to relish). So, my choice was simple, either get pushed out quietly, or make a fuss about it. I chose the latter.
I lost my job, but I would have anyway. The thing is, they didn’t force me to lose my self-respect in the process.
But today, in 2023, we shouldn’t be losing jobs for speaking out. We shouldn’t be shamed for standing up for ourselves or others. And we shouldn’t be silenced for calling out misogyny.
This is why I wrote a rom-com, No Worries if Not!, that explores these issues and, hopefully, serves as a call to arms to all of us to stand up for what we believe is right - and to stop needlessly apologising.
The apology epidemic
Sorry but could I just…
Hope you don’t mind but…
Can we nudge that meeting to a day that isn’t my birthday / house completion day? No worries if not…
If these statements don’t make you feel ‘seen’ then I wholeheartedly applaud you. Because I know that I am definitely guilty of using them. But as I started writing the book, which centres around main character, Charlotte, and her mission to break up with the word ‘sorry’, I decided that I would end my emails with no worries if not no more! And do you know what? Not only does it give you more confidence - it’s actually really liberating, too.
In fact, in the book, Charlotte’s workmate, Maya, calls out her over-apologetic nature, saying that every time she utters the ‘s’ word, she’s giving people a get out clause. A reason to not take her seriously, or to not do as she asks or to carry on being rude in the first place.
Let’s be honest, if you’ve had the misfortune of sitting next to a manspreader whose legs are wider than yours were at your last smear test, you often either put up and shut up or ask him to shift up a bit by apologising in advance (‘sorry but would you mind…’). It’s as though, in apologising first, we are suggesting we have no right to inhabit as much space as he has. We are giving him permission to believe we are the ones being difficult.
Lifting each other up
Feeling like an imposter, whether consciously or subconsciously, must surely play a part in this. When you’re still fighting for equality and having to elbow your way into a traditionally male space it can feel daunting and lonely. And if you’re trying to overcome several other barriers simultaneously, it can be even harder.
This is why we need to not only stand up for our own rights and try to grow in self-confidence, we need to be aware of inter-sectional issues, too. We need to lift each other up when we are in a position to do so. Because if a woman is a lone voice in a room, the ‘difficult’ label is more likely to stick and more likely to cause her, and others, ongoing harm or challenges. If you’re a woman who is facing multiple layers of in-built societal discrimination due to sexuality or race or disability, for example, then you’re wearing the burden of misogyny far more heavily than others.
In the words of one of my favourite Spark t-shirts, we are all the granddaughters of the witches they tried to burn – but in fighting this fight, we should make sure we’re there for all the witches (*nods to Emma Watson*).
Let’s stop needlessly apologising, but let’s not do it on our own. We’re definitely stronger and louder together.

We’re done with the first quarter of the year, Sparklers! We can finally take a breath. We start the month with Mercury entering Taurus, so we’re stepping into that big earth sign energy with grounded, down to earth thinking. Only further propelled by the Sun moving into Taurus towards the end of the month, so this is sure to last! This is a time of security, lots of self love and slow, intentional living. Touch some grass and enjoy basking in the beauty!
ARIES:
Happy Aries SZN! It’s your month, Aries. This month is a time to truly celebrate you and all your gloriousness. It’s time for fun! Get out there and do something that really lights you up. We know you’ll be partying with all your loved ones, but don’t forget to spend some time celebrating with yourself, too. Take yourself on a date, have a sexy sesh alone, speak your affirmations - treat yo’ self, Aries!
TAURUS:
Mercury comes into Taurus at the start of this month so you may be feeling more earth sign than ever! The energy here is firmly grounded, solid and no BS will be tolerated. Lean into this time of slow living. It’s okay to take time to process your thoughts and emotions and to fall in love with the ritual of monotony. Routines are rituals too, you know, and there’s beauty in the everyday. This month is all about prioritising you (and not feeling guilty about it).
CAPRICORN:
We see you meditating on top of the mountain this month, Cap. Watching over the carnage below. You’re the (literal) sea-GOAT of balancing the emotional and the physical realms. This month is all about balance, and since you’ve got that locked and loaded, why not go out and have some fun! Plan a trip, go on a date, spend some of that money we know you’ve got tucked away for times like this! Reward yourself. It’s okay to indulge…
SCORPIO:
Okay Scorpio, now is your time to shine. With an eclipse coming up, people around you might start acting on impulse, but you’ll see through all the shit. You scorpios are a lil bit psychic after all. It’s time to drop the baggage, don’t carry what’s not yours and don’t put up with anything that’s going to put you in a funk. We don’t have time for it!
LIBRA:
Oooh. We’re starting off the month with a full moon in Libra. This is a time for you to look at the areas of your life that need balance, especially within relationships. This full moon is focussed on equality (which we love!), so while reviewing the ways to be better for your loved ones, don't forget to ask yourself “what do I need?” because whatever it is, you deserve it, Libra.
LEO:
Leo, Leo, Leo, we love it when you shine! And you always do. Now is the time to revitalise yourself with the breath of fresh air that new experiences bring. It’s time to break the routine, Leo. We know you love to love, but live this month being authentically you, only for yourself, and see just how free it makes you feel. Be a little selfish this month, do something that only you want to do and don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks!
SAGITTARIUS:
We love how you’re always on a quest for knowledge, Sag. This month is a perfect time to flex that knowledge to the people you meet. There’s opportunity in the air, we can smell it! With Venus in Gemini, people will be drawn to your mind, so now is the time to show it off! Do a little shameless self-promotion and watch those rewards roll in.
GEMINI:
With Venus coming into Gemini at the start of this month, you may find yourself more inquisitive and drawn to the minds of the people you meet. This is a social and exciting time for you, Gemini, and we know you'll thrive in this energy! Have fun this month. Flirt, chat and get to know new people, now might just be the right time to step out of your comfort zone and spark interesting conversations with people you might not talk to otherwise. Who knows where this could lead…
PISCES:
Okay, Pisces, strap in (and strap on). You have a strong connection to both fantasy and reality, but now is the time to use discernment to navigate which is which. Things might heat up this month but this is a time for short term flings, having fun, learning things from others and getting a lil sexy… but remember to keep your head above water and see things for what they really are.
CANCER:
With a new moon coming up, now is the perfect time to tap into your confidence, to show yourself what you’re really capable of! This is the chance to start that new project, delve deeper into your passions and take the leap into doing that thing you might’ve been scared to do! Nothing great comes without a little risk, you’ve got this, Cancer. Trust in yourself and don’t hold back!
VIRGO:
Be careful of getting too narrow-minded this month, Virgo. Impulsivity and stubbornness is in the cards with Mercury in Taurus, so try to keep yourself in check by using your heightened common sense as discernment. Slow down your thought processes, keep your mind wide open and trust your gut once you’ve really thought things through!
AQUARIUS:
Out with the old, in with the new! That’s the message for you this month, Aquarius. It’s time to declutter your mind, drop anything that is no longer serving you and clean house! Jump into your journal (or your notes app) and re-evaluate everything that nags at you in the back of your mind, everything that you can’t be bothered putting up with anymore. And never be afraid to keep your boundaries firm.

]]>However, just in case you’re not really feeling the “two unnamed female characters with a collective screentime of 3 minutes and 42 seconds” kind of films these days, we figured we’ll do the grunt work and put all of this year’s Best Picture nominees through our favourite Bechdel test.
How does the Bechdel test work? Simple. To pass a movie has to meet the following criteria:
1. Have at least two named female characters
2. Have at least two of them engage in conversation
3. Have the conversation be about something other than a man.
(that last one is a particular favourite of ours)
Sounds ridiculously easy? We think so too but you might be surprised how many filmmakers seem to struggle 🙈 So, without further ado, let’s see how this year’s Best Picture nominees did…
All Quiet On The Western Front
How did it do: 0/3, ABYSMAL
Sure, it’s a war movie (famously women ceased to exist during World War I and then reappeared as soon as it was over) so we might have overlooked the lack or topic of conversation but this movie fails to even introduce any named female characters…
AVATAR: The Way of Water
How did it do: 3/3, DEBATABLE
While AVATAR: The Way of Water has quite a few female characters and they do engage in conversations multiple times (throughout the movie’s not inconsiderable 3+ hours runtime), there seems to be some debate online whether the nature of those conversations satisfies the Bechdel test. We’re giving it a passing grade but given all that its female characters are capable of and encounter, some more in-depth conversations and exploration of their stories wouldn’t have gone amiss.
The Banshees of Inisherin
How did it do: 3/3, SHOCKING
While The Banshees of Inisherin passes the test by the skin of its teeth, we were a little shocked that it was even close given its focus on the relationship between two men. While its female characters have precious few conversations, they do seem to be the only ones with any sense and Kerry Condon is very deserving of her own Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Elvis
How did it do: 1/3, SHOCKING x2
Sadly, Elvis shocks in the exact opposite way. It has a few named female characters but none of them even have a conversation with each other (not that we think it would’ve been about anything other than Elvis). Especially considering the importance of Elvis’ wife in his life and the many controversies surrounding their relationship, it was disappointing to see how little screen time Olivia DeJonge actually had.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
How did it do: 3/3, ALL THE AMAZING WOMEN EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
If you want to watch a movie that kicks the Bechdel test’s ass like the nerdiest kid in class, look no further than Everything Everywhere All At Once. Evelyn and Joy are arguably the main characters of the movie and have many, many deeply personal and philosophical conversations. In addition to that, multiple female characters are seen in queer relationships and you know they’re not spending their time talking about guys. We’re rooting for this whole cast and crew!
The Fabelmans
How did it do: 3/3, GOOD
While the focus of the film is definitely on its male protagonist, there are multiple named female characters in The Fabelmans. What is more, they actually have journeys of their own and thus, conversations that do not revolve only around the men in their lives.
TÁR
How did it do: 3/3, BRILLIANT
You need only watch Tar’s trailer to know it will pass this test easily. The film has a plethora of female characters masterfully conducted by the ever badass Cate Blanchett. It explores art and human psyche through its main female character in ways that make the task of having two named women share a conversation about something other than a man sound like a piece of cake.
Top Gun: Maverick
How did it do: 3/3, HUH
Top Gun: Maverick isn’t going to be winning any awards for its well-developed female characters but we have to give it one thing - it does do the bare minimum. It has a few female characters among its male-dominated cast and two of them, Maverick’s love interest Penny and her daughter Amelia, even manage to squeeze in a couple of conversations that are not wholly focused on Maverick.
Triangle of Sadness
How did it do: 3/3, OH WOW
While Triangle of Sadness might not be the film on this list with the most female characters having the longest philosophical discussions, it has absolutely earned its place in our 3/3 group. It puts its female characters in leadership positions on multiple occasions and allows them to discuss their dreams and desires as well as the practicalities and politics of survival and the skills they bring to the table.
Women Talking
How did it do: 3/3, DUH
Could you imagine if this movie didn’t make it… No, Women Talking most definitely lives up to its name. The trailer actually has only women talking, so you know we’re off to a solid start. Its characters are played by some of the best actresses today, given the kind of material that you can truly make something of and shown on their poignant and powerful journeys. So, yes, it definitely passes the test and then some.
Overall, there are some absolutely outstanding female characters and performances in these movies but some of them are also so glaringly lacking in them. Whether the Oscars hold any weight for you or not, a few of these movies really are must-sees, so make some popcorn and enjoy a weekend of cinema and join us on our socials on Monday to scream about whether one of our 3/3 films won the big one.]]>
We caught up with our favourite female and LGBTQ+ business owner, Sarah, of Pretty In Ink in Suffolk, to pick her brains about what it's like to run a female-focussed space, and what her experiences have been in the often intimidating world of tattoo shops...
Q: Why do you think tattoo studios can be traditionally intimidating?
A: Most tattooists are very friendly, kind people, but there’s always a worry about turning up somewhere new, especially when you’re usually met by a rather heavily tattooed and pierced individual.
You don’t want to feel that they’re looking down on your design.
A lot of tattoo studios can be dark, gothic or sterile, with a lot of people milling about, so can be very intimidating going in. I was incredibly nervous getting my first one, and can still feel a little anxious going somewhere new.
Q: Why is it important for women to have a female-run tattoo studio?
A: It’s so important for anyone to feel they have a safe space, and I just think you can achieve that more at a female run studio. Whether you just don’t want to be surrounded by toxic masculinity, as a man or woman, or you’re after a brighter, more chatty environment, it’s good to feel you can relax, especially as you may be feeling a little vulnerable anyway.
Q: What has your experience been like as a woman working in the tattoo industry?
A: My experience has been varied… On one hand, I have made fantastic friends, two of my closest are both female tattoo artists, and as tattooing is still a hugely male dominated industry, we have really found it amazing to be able to build each other up, and have formed a huge bond over the profession.
There are also the downsides, where there is an element of toxic masculinity (not in all studios I must stress) where keeping up with the “banter” is often hard work, but mandatory. This is one of the reasons I went out on my own.
Q: How did you decide to bite the bullet and start your own business?
A: I have always been dedicated to providing the best service for all my customers, and the next step was to create an even more relaxing, inclusive and welcoming environment, where I strive to make everyone who comes in as comfortable as possible!
It was a natural step from renting a chair, and when the perfect space became available, I jumped at the chance! Being able to be your own boss is liberating, and I love it! It has its challenges, especially in this climate, but being able to set the vibe of your space, and work to the beat of your own drum is awesome.
Q: Tell us about the aesthetic of your studio…
A: Its colourful, quirky and stylish, but also bright, relaxing and comfortable!
Among the funky pictures and leopard print, there’s an aesthetic that really speaks to people, and there’s a lot to distract you, which is great when you are being tattooed.
It’s feminine, but not so much that it repels my male customers. (A guy won’t care that there’s a bright pink Chesterfield in the corner) but the colours and pictures seem to relax people, and Giles the large ceramic leopard is always a talking point!
Q: Tell us why your studio chooses to support Outreach Youth?
A: I am an active member in the LGBTQ+ community, and it hugely supports me and my business, and I wanted to try and give something back. They do amazing work within the area, and being a smaller charity I love that I can support them where I can.
The charity events have always been hugely popular, and I know the donations made by everyone will make a massive difference.
It’s so important to try and support charities where you can, and I really love the collaboration we have made.
Q: What’s the tattoo you’re asked to do the most? What’s the worst tattoo you’ve ever been asked to do (or any other funny anecdote our readers might like)?
A: I genuinely love my job, and every tattoo that comes through my door means something special to someone, and it’s humbling that people trust me with their designs.
A lot of my customers come to me for my fun, colourful, quirky tattoo designs, and I live for anything geeky or Disney, but I really am happy to follow all the trends, and I try to work accordingly.
That said … I have tattooed two W’s, one on each but cheek, so when my customer bent over, it reads… Well, you know!
Check out the original and fantastical designs that were born in our collab with Pretty In Ink HERE! 💖

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know about the dystopian nightmare that is unfolding in the US at the moment. The famous Roe v. Wade law, which essentially gives uterus-owners the right to safe and legal abortions is being overturned by the US Supreme Court. This is alarming for a number of reasons, be it the need for unsafe ‘back-door’ abortions where people are forced to obtain abortions illegally, or the lack of respect for people’s freedom to have autonomy over their bodies and healthcare.
Thankfully, the UK gives greater access to abortion and birth-related healthcare than the US, but a lot of us don’t know exactly what that looks like. For people living in England, Wales, and Scotland, you have the right to abort an unwanted pregnancy before 24 weeks and in exceptional circumstances, have the right to one after this date if your life is at risk or the child would be born with a severe disability. Unfortunately, Ireland is more conservative and only allows legal abortions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, but also has an exceptional circumstance clause for risk to the parent or fetus.
WHO, the World Health Organisation, in the last few months has released new guidelines for abortion care in a bid to protect the health of women and girls and help prevent over 25 million unsafe abortions that currently occur internationally each year. “Being able to obtain a safe abortion is a crucial part of health care,” said Craig Lissner, acting Director for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at WHO. “Nearly every death and injury that results from unsafe abortion is entirely preventable. That’s why we recommend women and girls can access abortion and family planning services when they need them.”
While it might feel like this fight is a million miles away, it’s important for all people who believe in the right to bodily autonomy to come together to protest the barbaric laws that are coming into place in the US. Whether it’s supporting UK-based pro-choice charities, attending a protest, signing a petition, or supporting charities overseas, every action taken, no matter how small, will help to fight the injustices people are facing in the US at the moment. We’ve compiled a cheat sheet below to help guide you in the right direction, but if you can, take time to research the best ways you as an individual can help, there’s no one size fits all solution.
Pro-choice charities to support in the UK
British Pregnancy Advisory Service
BPAS is the UK's largest provider of abortion services. They are an independent healthcare charity that for more than 50 years, has been advocating and caring for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy.
See how you can get involved here.
Abortion Support Network helps people who need to access safe abortions. They provide information on clinics, travel, and accommodation, and provide financial assistance to help with costs for those who need it.
See how you can support them here.
Abortion Rights is the national pro-choice campaign fighting to defend and extend women’s rights and access to safe, legal abortion.
They have organised a protest in London this coming weekend - Saturday 14th May to march to the US embassy in London. For more information, click here.

WE are campaigning to make abortion free, safe, and legal in every part of the UK.

Pro-choice charities to support in the US
NARAL Pro-Choice America is an organisation made up of pro-choice women and men across the United States. Together, they protect a woman's right to choose.
To support their cause, click here.
The mission of the National Abortion Federation is to unite, represent, serve, and support abortion providers in delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care.
See how you can support them here.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a nonprofit organization that provides sexual health care in the United States and globally.
To support their cause, click here.
Not everyone can afford to support causes important to them financially, but there are many ways you can add your voice to the gathering crowds. If you can donate your time through volunteering or protesting, following activists on social media to stay up-to-date, talking to your partner, friends, and family about what is going on, or writing to your local elected officials, it all helps. Your voice is always important, don’t underestimate its power.

It’s almost halfway through the year Sparklers and this Lady Universe just cannot believe how quickly time is flying. Thankfully, the mess that was May is coming to a close with Mercury finally coming out of retrograde on June 3rd, which is also around the time we enter Gemini season - the crafty twin baes that bring curiosity and change which is what we’re all about right now. Not only that but we have the full moon in Sagittarius on June 14th which is going to encourage us to look at things from a different perspective. It’s all happening Sparklers, so put on your loungewear, grab the chilled vino and settle in for the ride.
ARIES:
Not going to bury the lead on this one as the stars are saying this month could be the time you meet your soulmate - say what?! Remember, soul mates come in all forms, not just romantic connections, so keep an eye out for that special someone who could become a main character in your life. Concentrate on this good news because unfortunately work and family aren’t giving you, sweet Aries, as much life this month. Both sections may come with challenges so remember to take deep breaths and not do anything rash.
TAURUS:
Good news Taurus, for those of you waiting for that promotion or recognition at work, this month could be your time. The planets have come together and said “yas, gurl, we see you” and finally your superiors are on board. Unfortunately, that’s where the good news stops as relationships might be a little tricky this month. You might not see eye to eye with your partner and if that is the case remember single women are the happiest demographic, so whatever happens you’re going to be fine.
GEMINI:
Everything's coming up sunny side for you this month Gemini, and no surprise considering this is your season, so strut those streets like it’s your runway gurl, because there are good times ahead. We’re talking fun at work, even a potential promotion, as well as great times with friends, loved ones, and family. But remember, nothing is guaranteed so to get those good times you need to have a bright, positive perspective. Try not to get down into the unnecessary details this season, be carefree and enjoy your time.
CANCER:
Cancerians, you are a unique sign, and don’t ever let anyone distinguish your light. Now is the time to be as you as you can be, not letting any haters or people that don’t understand you steer you off course. Your uniqueness is what makes you so great and it’s what is going to propel you forward during this time. Good things are coming as long as you stay true to yourself, listen to that crab gut and block out any negative losers.
LEO:
Show Leo the monnnneeyyyyy! This month it’s raining cold hard cash for Leo’s in business, so be mindful of what’s on offer and make decisions accordingly. It’s also a great time to hit the road and explore, so grab your loved ones and go on a cheeky adventure. Choose carefully though, family life has the potential to derail your good mood, so keep away people that suck your energy as opposed to filling you up.
VIRGO:
This month brings good news and bad news sorry Virgo. The good news is your health should be A-OK this month, so look after yourself and you’ll see the benefits. The bad news is that work is going to be a bit of a bitch this month, so taking care of yourself will make the career struggles just that little bit easier. Don’t worry though, bad times are always temporary and there’s plenty of goodness to look forward to coming your way in the months to come.
LIBRA:
The universe is giving you two strong messages this month Libra, so be sure to take note. Firstly, now is the time to be genuine in everything you do. This includes being honest to others as well as yourself. Now is not the time for deceit and lies, it’ll only come back to bite you tenfold down the line. Secondly, now is not the time to make that big purchase or splash the cash. Save for that rainy day, you don’t know what’s coming down the track, so give your future self the best chance by being careful today.
SCORPIO:
Life is looking good this month but you will only get out what you put in Scorpio. Now is the time to put the effort up to the max and show the ones you love how much they mean to you. Play with the kiddies, plan a date night for the partner, or buy a coffee for your fave colleague. It’s all about reaping what you sow this month my little scorpions so put that stinger away and bring the good vibes.
SAGITTARIUS:
This month is all about career and education for our Sagittarius sisters. Focus on these sectors of your life and the planets will help you achieve your goals. Remember there is no gain without a little pain, so put in that extra effort and the universe promises to reward you. Don’t be reckless with your ideas and decisions though, a bad investment can be as damaging as a good one, so take your time to consider the pros and cons.
CAPRICORN:
Take a beat sweet Capricorn and trust the process. Right now you might want to be going a mile-a-minute, but the universe has other plans for you. Now is the time to take stock and wait patiently for what is meant to come your way. Be grateful for what you have and trust in yourself that good times are coming. Things might feel like they’re steering off course right now, but trust in your skillset and empathy to bring things back to equilibrium.
AQUARIUS:
Your health is looking good this month but only if you work on it. Be conscious about both your physical and your mental health, as one cannot reach its potential without the other. For all the Aquarian business babes out there, this month is a good time for you. Be brave in your decisions, make the most of the opportunities that are coming your way, you won’t regret it.
PISCES:
Oh lovely Pisces, you’re in for a killer of a month. June is all about the romance, so light those candles, run that bubble bath and make it known to your partner that you are in the mood for lurrrvvve. For those single Pisceans, do not disappear, self love is just as important as relationship love, so call your fuck buddy, charge that vibrator and treat yourself to some leg-shaking fun. It might also be the right time to try that something that makes you a little afraid, so be brave dear Piscean, your fave new position could be just around the corner.
The positivity movement sounds good on the outside right? All that positive thinking can only result in you living your best life surely. Surely not, actually. While there is nothing wrong with looking for the bright side or keeping an open mind, this wave of “goodness” is causing more harm than it is good. When you think about it, it’s no surprise that dismissing negative emotions and responding to hardship with false reactions can’t be good for you in the long run, and it’s this “positive wellness” movement that seems to be disproportionately disadvantageous to women rather than men. Why is that? Let’s break that down, shall we?
#Blessed
Humility is at the core of the outdated, cis-gendered perception of womanhood and something that’s drilled into women from a young age. We’re conditioned to be grateful for some of the most basic human needs, such as love or domestic support. Again, there’s nothing wrong with feeling grateful for your life at times, but the notion that you’re lucky to be given the basic scraps of a happy life is not surprisingly, extremely detrimental. Men on the other hand are given words like “killing it”, “dominating”, or “smashing it”, see a pattern here? Remember that while it’s important at times to feel grateful, it’s also important to listen to those feelings when you don’t. Feeling fed-up, over it, and ready to throw in the towel are all very normal, important reactions to the hard situations we all face. Putting on a “brave face” isn’t always the answer.
We’re too emotional.
We’ve all heard this one right? We’re just the most fragile, emotional creatures to ever walk the earth. Never mind that men are allowed to punch a hole in a wall when they’re frustrated and then get called “willful”. Often we feel the need to hide or diminish our negative emotions at the risk of being called “emotional”. Thankfully, feminists have been sick of this for a while now and we’re leading the crusade when it comes to being (rightfully) angry and showing it. Unfortunately, toxic trends like the positive movement negate any progress made here, because it can make us feel like we’re doing ourselves a disservice by feeling our genuine feelings. But fuck that, get angry we say. A lot of us have every right to be.
Give us a smile, love!
Ugh, one of our most hated unsolicited comments. Women are conditioned to be pleasant no matter how uncomfortable or compromised we feel and unfortunately, the positive thinking movement only strengthens this unfair expectation. Reinforcing that you shouldn’t speak up for yourself or make your feelings known in situations where you feel threatened or unsafe is not only bad for your mental health but can threaten your physical well-being too. Although then there’s the flipside of the reaction of challenging unstable, unpredictable men. Oh, what a joy it is to be a woman!
Free time? What is that again?
According to the Office for National Statistics, when it came to unpaid chores at home, women were doing almost 40% more than men on average. This is usually on top of paid employment too. The positivity movement gives us an excuse to hold in negative emotions as it generally results in a quick fix. But unfortunately, avoiding the conflict at the moment and suppressing your true feelings, only leads to a bigger hurdle to jump over down the road.
This is all well and good but what is the answer? In a nutshell, fuck it. Your emotions are valid and you have the right to express them. We’re not advocating to go around and blow your life up, successful relationships are built on the balance of give and take, however, don’t let the positivity movement stop you from processing situations that are negative or stressful, especially if it’s to make someone else feel more comfortable. You have the right to be respected, no matter if you’re happy, sad, stressed or in the middle of a complete breakdown.

Shit is getting real this month, Sparklers, and like the absolute Queen that is Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, Lady Universe is here to slay. Aries season is upon us and so is Spring, bringing with it the opportunity for growth and rejuvenation. Set those intentions, gurls, Lady Universe can only help you when you ask for it.
ARIES:
Happy birthday season beautiful Aries. Now is the time to live it up and celebrate all things you. Birthday season is a great time to put yourself in the spotlight and work towards your biggest goals, Lady Universe has your back. The new moon of the year arrives 11th April, so grab this energy by the ovaries and make shit happen.
TAURUS:
Good news, it’s time to take a well deserved break, grab a wine, and take the time to think about what it is you actually want. Lady Universe is giving you a free pass to sit this one out, so take advantage. The new moon on the 11th is telling you to do just this. Especially as birthday season is on its way for you, and you know that’s going to be carnage (in the best way).
GEMINI:
Pop on your running shoes Gemini because this month is all about productivity. The full moon on the 26th is bringing with it energy. Could be in relationships, work or your health. Take this time to make shit happen. You’ll be busy, but the grind will be worth it if you put in the work.
CANCER:
Mars is getting up in your grill on the 23rd, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Harness it’s powerful and dominant energy to get shit done. Set your mind to your goals and use Mars’ big dick energy to ask for that raise, communicate with your partner or set some personal boundaries.
LEO:
You are the life of the party up until the 23rd of this month. You’re invited to all the gatherings and making all the memories. Enjoy this! You’ll have the energy, but remember that there is only so much to go around. Stop when you feel tired as a rested gurl is a happy gurl. Also, take note at the end of the month, something is up in your domestic house which means there could be some issues at home. Don’t stress, but keep an eye out.
VIRGO:
I’m just going to come right out and say it, this month the sun wants you to get some. It’s firing hot in your intimacy sector, which means it’s time to get freaky and communicate your wants with your partner (or vibrator, we’re all about the self love baby). Lady Universe wants to see that post-O glow, don’t disappoint her. You’ve also got Mars in your career sector this month, so let’s put some fire in the boardroom as well as in the sheets, Virgo.
LIBRA:
The new moon on the 11th is telling you to get your communication on, so take some time to understand what it is you truly want from your relationships (not just romantic ones BTW), and open up those channels of communication to work towards your goals. If you’re single and wanting to find someone, this is a great time to be upfront about what you want, you deserve it.
SCORPIO:
You’ve got planets right up in your productivity sector this month, so shit is going to get busy, but in the best way. Embrace the chaos because beauty will follow. Look out for new opportunities on the 11th (new moon energy yall), and assess whether they’re right for you. Remember, change can be great, but it should be seriously considered first.
SAGITTARIUS:
The sun, Venus and Mercury are having a threesome in your passion sector this month (sounds hot), so lay back and enjoy that passionate energy. We’ve also got Mars coming to join the party (such a perv), but it’s bringing with it some big dick energy to help you get what you want. Don’t be shy, make your desires known.
CAPRICORN:
The sun is up in your domestic sector this month, Capricorns, so enjoy this much needed downtime at home. It brings with it comfort and stability, we’re talking cosy socks, neverending bottles of pinot and Netflix marathons. The new moon on the 11th will open up some new doors, to see you transform your home, potentially move or even help a loved one.
AQUARIUS:
You’re bursting with ideas, Aquarians, and thankfully you’ve got the new moon on the 11th opening your communication sector. Take this opportunity to grab your soapbox and speak your truth. Remember, communication comes in so many forms, so pick the medium that works best for you. There’s also a potential breakthrough or opportunity at the end of the month, so keep an eye out.
PISCES:
Mars is really bringing it for you this month, being mostly in your domestic sector. This doesn’t have to be bad, although Mars is a fiery queen so be careful what you say. Wise Pisceans will use this energy to make things happen, be it renovations or a move entirely. At the end of the month Mars then moves into your passion sector, so if you do end up spending the start of the month fighting, don’t worry, as it’ll end in great make-up sex.

Yes, IWD is about celebrating all the women in our lives – be that with a card, flowers, dismantling the taboo on menstruation, chocolates, jewelry, the fall of the patriarchy… you know, stuff women like. It’s calling your mum and treating your sister or friend to dinner, acknowledging and honouring female inventors and pioneers, showing your wife or girlfriend how much you love her.
It’s all of that. But it is also about respect, which we don’t want thrown out in a week, with our wilted flowers. Respect makes women a part of every important conversation – be it about school education, business or (and how is that even a conversation?!) our own bodies.
Our team is comprised almost entirely of women, and we all agree on one thing – we don’t want to be celebrated one day a year, we want to be listened to, always. We’ve done our very best to apply that philosophy to every part of our business – from constantly consulting and listening to our customers to seeking and appreciating the opinions of everyone on our team.
We contacted some of our customers and collaborators from different backgrounds and asked them a few questions, because we wanted to get to know them better, because they are pretty awesome people but, mostly, because their thoughts matter. None of them accused us of nagging them too much, for which we are very grateful.
We’re sharing some of the brilliant answers we received, in the hope that they will spark more conversations. You’re most welcome to drop us an email or pop in for a chat with your own opinions, or take the discussion to your friends, family or coworkers. At the end of the day, most change starts with a conversation.
On the progress we’ve made in the last 10 years:
Rachel (Communications and Public Fundraising Director, Bloody Good Period): It’s a lot more acceptable to talk about periods now than it was a decade ago. We have period-themed books, art, stock photos, films, comedy nights and TikToks. Many people also have access to a better range of healthier, more sustainable period products, and there’s more understanding of the whole menstrual cycle.
But there’s also still a long way to go. Many refugees, people in the asylum system and those living in poverty simply cannot afford period products. Women and people who menstruate suffer because of the culture of embarrassment and shame that exists around this natural, biological process.
We don’t believe that anyone should be at a disadvantage just because they menstruate.
On how we teach children about equality:
Maggie (Math and Science Teacher): As educators, it is our responsibility to teach our students about equality and respect. One of the most important ways is by being a role model, this can be respect for our students, our environment, our bodies... this means making our students feel safe around their peers and their teacher, admitting when we’ve made a mistake, being empathetic and showing awareness when talking about body size to avoid reinforcing stereotypes and avoid putting gender roles, such as asking boys to move tables for example.
I’m lucky that I work in a school where promoting equality and diversity is taken very seriously. For example, we spend a lot of time ‘decolonising our curriculum’. This means the English department ensures our students are not studying literature by ‘dead white men’ unless it is a specific requirement from exam boards. I use as much diverse material as possible in my lessons, for example a PSHE lesson on ‘consent’ would include scenarios with straight and LGBTQ+ people.
On what you’d like every woman in the world to know:
Natasha (writer, presenter & activist, author of the upcoming novel Toxic): ‘You Are Enough’. I work with young people and a teenage girl once said to me ‘I feel like we’re getting feminism wrong – I thought it was about women choosing whatever they wanted to do, not feeling like they have to do EVERYTHING and do it perfectly’.
This toxic perfectionism manifests so early and it’s not helped by all the ‘she’s a CEO, model, philanthropist, she has a cookbook, her own range of ethically sourced workout leggings and she’s back in her size 0 jeans just months after giving birth to her fourth child’ stuff that we see everywhere. Give us a break!
On advice you received from another woman or want to give your younger self:
Charlotte (Senior Features Writer at OutNewsGlobal.com): My mother is a font of wisdom and it's hard to pick one piece of advice she's given me that stands out amongst the rest.
However, I'll never forget the time I'd just been dumped when I was 18, and she said "Remember tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life." A cliche, sure, but hearing her say it at that moment was so important to me. I could really imagine a line being drawn under everything I'd just been through and a fresh start.
Maggie: Embrace your differences, don’t hide it, it’s your superpower! Learn how to stand up to anyone who doesn’t feel the same.
Natasha: My Mum once said to me ‘some people are just kn*bheads’. I spend a lot of time trying to work out what motivates other people and what I have done “wrong” to make them behave badly towards me. The advantage of this is it makes me empathetic and open-minded, the disadvantage is it causes me a lot of anxiety and it means I tend to get my boundaries trampled over.
So ‘some people are just kn*bheads’ is something I really need to hear sometimes – Don’t overthink it, don’t change your own world view, just distance yourself from their kn*bheaddery!
On cliches about feminism – good or bad:
Natasha: ‘You’ll only ever be as pretty as you are agreeable’. I love and hate that depending on how it’s interpreted.
It can be used in a ‘be nice otherwise you’ll look awful’ way (think that Roald Dahl quote) or, a more useful way of viewing it is ‘if you say something that challenges the status quo people will attack how you look to try and shut you up’. I’ve had that happen to me so many times in my career and it’s useful to remember.
Charlotte: I object to any cliches which talk about how women "carry life" as some of us have fertility issues and/or don't feel comfortable with the idea of using a donor within a same-sex relationship.
And a few messages for everyone on IWD:
Natasha: I like Caitlin Moran’s theory that feminism is like a patchwork quilt and we each have our square. Sometimes the sheer scale of sexism and misogyny can feel too overwhelming to tackle, but if we all do our bit in whatever way we are able then we create something massive.
Rachel: The cost of living crisis will push more people into making impossible choices between food, heating, nappies or other essentials, and menstrual supplies. You can make a massive difference today by making a donation to Bloody Good Period - thank you so bloody much!
Check out our International Women's Day clothing here. Every purchase includes a donation to an inspiring women's charity.
]]>Gather your coven because it’s time to haunt the patriarchy. Nothing scares them more than a woman who knows her power (and equal rights, obvs). So for this Halloween, we thought we’d give you a cheat sheet on some of our fave witches to inspire your Halloween attire this year.
]]>
NB: Always remember cultures are not costumes. When dressing up as any character you need to respect its cultural heritage and interrupt your design in a respectful way.
A totally misunderstood character, Ursula from The Little Mermaid makes a mean costume for Halloween, with some amazing songs to boot.
If you and your friends want to be creepy AF this Halloween, this ones for you. These witches know their craft, and they ain’t afraid to fuck shit up.
She appears harmless, but we all know this character is one of the most powerful forces in the show.
Another misunderstood character (do we see a pattern here?), if you go with the Meryl Streep version of this character, you’ve got a beautiful blue costume to rock.
One of the easiest costumes to pull together. Green paint, black hat, check.
We know you know this one but how could we not include them. Back in the day, we were all about being Sarah, but now we’re big fans of Mary.
An oldie but a goodie, Endora is an icon! Not putting up with her son-in-law's BS, she lets everyone know she's not impressed.
No disrespect to the new version, but we’re sticking with the Anjelica Huston version of the Grand High Witch. The sharp hair, the black dress, love it.
Watch this movie and not start a coven, we dare you!
If it’s good enough for Gaga, it’s good enough for us.
This one is a real love-to-hate situation here because we all know she’s a baddie, but how great is her look? No seriously? The hair, the black, yes queen.
For the non-traditional witch, look no further. We’ve got silver, we’ve got glitter, it’s a crafters dream.
If we're being honest, Angela Bassett as any character is goals! But this character especially, my goodness, command a room much!
While you're in a witchy mood, check out our witchy clothing and accessories collection here.

The planets are basically cock-blocking you, just ride it out as good times are ahead.
TAURUS:
It’s time to hit the road and see the world (safely and according to covid-safe protocols, obvs). This month is a great time for you to see places you haven’t before. GEMINI:
Listen, it’s not your month Gemini. I hate to say it, but the truth shall set you free. There might be some hurdles this month, but you are strong baby gurl, ride them out like the boss you are and everything will be OK. In good news, your health is looking fab, so that’s something right?
CANCER:
It’s your time to shine, Cancer! We’re talking great times at work, existing relationships kicking goals, and potentially even life-changing love for those who are single. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Remember to stop and appreciate these positive vibes, they can leave as fast as they come.
LEO:
Take a deep breath and relax because October looks pretty chill for you. Those in relationships might find the first week a little rocky, but after that, it’s easy street in all areas. Take this time to chill and recharge.
VIRGO:
It’s time to get busy Virgo because this month is all about lurrrvvve. Light those candles, grab your sex toys, and make it a night to remember. Business and health are looking good to go, so enjoy this month of wins.

SCORPIO:
Everything is looking ace for you, except for work, that’s a bit crap. So focus on relationships, both romantic and platonic, and lean into that healthy lifestyle. There are lots of wins this month (just ignore career BS).
SAGITTARIUS:
It’s all about business this month. And no I don’t mean sexy business (unfortunately), we’re talking brass tax. So take a chance on that investment, ask your boss for that meeting, the planets have your back. And for those in relationships, understanding is key this month, so get cash and empathy yall.
CAPRICORN:
It’s all about career for you this month Capricorns. The planets have got your back when it comes to bizness so make sure you take advantage. Relationships might be rocky in the first few weeks but sit tight as they get easy towards the end.
AQUARIUS:
The planets are telling you to travel, gurl (safely and according to covid-safe protocols, obvs) because apparently there are some gains to be had outside of your house. Also, there could be some family drama, so maybe getting away is just what you need.
PISCES:
It’s a good month for you Pieces. We’re talking happy times in your career, good health, fun times in relationships (more so towards the end). So ride that good wave and appreciate the happy times ahead.

There’s a hilarious sketch from SNL that parodies women’s obsession with true crime (It’s called Murder Show, worth a watch). The women sit around singing about how they casually watch horrifying and graphic retellings of true crime while they do mundane, life admin tasks like fold laundry and pay taxes, it’s their “relaxing time”. It seems like an odd combination but I’m guessing it doesn’t feel that foreign to you, because anyone with ears and the slightest attention span can see that true crime stories have taken over most mediums, and you can’t search for new podcast, television show or book without being given gruesome recommendations.
You’re also probably not surprised to hear that it’s mostly women consuming this genre. But why? As a long time fan of true crime (as a child I used to say I wanted to be a blood splatter expert, is that normal?), I’ve always found a weird comfort in true crime stories, but it only occurred to me in my adult years as to why that is. Being a classic #dork growing up (a badge I wear proudly), I always had my head in a book, so being fascinated with all stories, even disturbing ones, didn’t seem like that much of a leap. But it turns out it’s so much more than that.
The first reason to note is it gives women a sense of community. I know, sounds weird, but we all know the dangers of being a woman in society, we have a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted here in the UK, we’re more likely to be killed by someone we know than a stranger, and we’re brought up the classic tropes about “boys only wanting one thing” accompanied by how to use your keys as tiny shives. We hear stories about women being attacked almost daily, but knowing we’re not in this alone, that the collective feels uneasy walking to their car alone at night the way we do, makes it a little easier.
Secondly, we’re pragmatic. This is basically a reconnaissance mission for us. We watch these shows and take mental notes about what to look out for in a potential attacker, how the victim fell into their trap, and how they managed to escape if they did. We deep dive into the attacker's childhood, mental diagnoses, sometimes we go as far as analysing their diet. I don’t know about you, but I can say I’ve learned countless tricks from listening to true crime podcasts, and now if I ever feel threatened or slightly wary of someone, I “fuck politeness” as My Favorite Murder hosts Karen and Georgia say and get the hell out of there while taking a mental note of their approx. height, age, and clothes just in case.
And lastly, we care about each other. We listen to these horrific retellings because we want the victims' stories to be heard and not forgotten. So often when reporting crime, people focus on the attacker, with the victim becoming collateral damage along the way. We’re not here for this, we want the thousands of women taken too early to live on in a small way, and we do this by knowing and preserving their stories.

We love them but we all know there are some children's films that can be a bit err… questionable when it comes to portraying the genders in an equal light. So we’ve compiled a list of “feminist friendly” kids films that pass the Bechdel Test to help you raise your little advocate.
For those not in the know, the Bechdel test is a basic feminist test for movies and for it to pass there needs to be a conversation between two female or gender minority characters, both have to be named and they have to talk about anything other than a man. Got it? Let’s go!
Moana
Who doesn’t love Moana? A brave young girl on an adventure to save her people and find her identity? Plus the music is 🤏 and obviously, there’s actually a conversation between two female characters that isn’t about a dude!
Frozen
A personal fave for a lot of the Spark Team, Frozen of course passes the Bechdel Test because Anna and Elsa continuously talk about things not related to a man. Elsa is also your bad arse solo aunt just living her best life.
Brave
Merida for President! Absolutely love this film and the complete lack of romantic relationships surrounding the main character. Show this film to your kids as an example of non-mainstream protagonists absolutely killing it.
Tangled
A modern retelling of the ol’ Rupunzel fairy tale, this movie sees Rupunzel save herself which of course we’re here for. She does have a little help from a guy but they’re not all bad right?
The Incredibles
A great film that passes the Bechdel Test, The Incredibles sees lots of conversations between Elastigirl and Violet talking about science and other cool stuff not related to a man.
Cinderella
Believe it or not, but old school Cinderella does indeed pass the Bechdel Test. Although we’ll need to rewatch this one as for the life of us we can’t think of conversations between two women that don’t revolve around men. Even the step sisters are husband crazy.
Zootopia
Love this one! Juddy Hopps and Bellwether, two female characters, who several times during the film about their past and discrimination in the city. While they sometimes discuss male characters, it’s not all about the boy, which obviously is the point.
Remember, while the Bechdel Test is a good starting point, it doesn’t mean these films don’t have blind spots or room for improvement. It’s not a definitive test of equality, but it is something.

ARIES:
This month is all about connecting with your SO or if you’re single, finding your new coven to chill with. Remember to give people time to understand your needs, however, not everyone moves at your bad gurl pace. Heads up, work is going to suck this month too, so ride it out and don’t overthink it, the planets will have your back a little later on.
TAURUS:
You’re a bad bitch, own it. This month has your back when it comes to going after what you want. Keep this in mind when it comes to romance, but also remember you don’t want a partner that mirrors your every thought and action, embrace the differences. For those of you in relationships, why not try something new this month. Roleplay? Sex toys? Whatever tickles your metaphorical pickle, as long as it’s consensual (and legal), the world is your sexual oyster.
GEMINI:
Some good news and bad news. The good news for those of you in relationships is you and your partner are going to work well together this month. The bad news is that there will be lots of challenges thrown your way to test that teamwork - share those domestic responsibilities yall! For singletons, it ain’t much better, the drought will be long and dry this month. Treat yourself to a new sex toy to ease the pain.
CANCER:
Drop the kids off at the grandparents, lock the door and remember to stay hydrated Cancerians because according to the universe you’re going to be porking all month long. Good thing too as apparently work might be a bit of a bitch this month. Thank gawd you’ve got all that S-E-X to help you blow off some steam, am I right?
LEO:
I don’t want to big anything up but basically, everything is going to rock for you this month. Relationships, family, work, health, it’s all good baby. Make sure you appreciate these good times though, lady universe might turn around and bitch slap you next month, so enjoy the easy ride while it’s here.
VIRGO:
Listen, if you were hoping work was going to be the highlight of your month you may have to wait another few weeks or so. But the good news is that family and relationships are looking pretty cushty. And if you’re on the hunt for lovin’, buckle up and always use protection as this could be your month.
LIBRA:
It’s your season bitches so forking enjoy! Everything is looking like pie so go out and enjoy it. Take a risk in love, ask for that raise, make sure you treat yourself, the planets have got your back and the getting is going to be good.
SCORPIO:
Attention single Scorpios, the last week of September is your chance for lovin’, write that down. For those of you in a relationship, things are OK but don’t forget to compromise. Work and business are looking promising so make sure you sign that contract, host that meeting, and be the boss bitch you are.
SAGITTARIUS:
The first two weeks are looking dicey for those in a relationship, so try to avoid conflict (or even better, each other). If you’re single, however, the planets are playing wing-woman this month, so go out there and get grafting. Work isn’t looking bad either, so if new opportunities arise, now is the time to go for it.
CAPRICORN:
Got a new biz idea?! Now is the time to make it a reality. The planets have your back in this area, and they’re investing their cosmic goodness all up in your business. Love is looking a little sketchy for both singles and loved-ups, so stay vigilant until the end of the month until the love fest starts.
AQUARIUS:
I don’t want to start anything, but the planets are saying that your next partner is already a friend. OHHH SHIT!! Cosmic bomb drop! If you’re already coupled up, September is going to be hot, bae. Health and career don’t look bad either, you know.
PISCES:
This month is all about communication for Pisceans. Talk to your SO, chat up the hotties at the bar (if they’re interested obvs, no harassing please), and schedule that important meeting with your boss. This month is all about using your communication skills to advance all areas of your life. Thank me later.

]]>We’ve stopped doing this right? No judgement for those who have, hell, I’ve put on a performance or two in the past, but we all now agree that our orgasms are more important than our partner's ego, right? Right!
But here’s the thing, how could anyone believe we could do it in the first place? Physically do it I mean, not “how can anyone believe the patriarchy would engineer a way for men to ignore women’s pleasure”, that bit doesn’t surprise me. But anyone lucky enough to feel the all-mighty, earth-moving orgasm knows that it comes along with an obvious physical response, and it blows my mind that the patriarchy has convinced not only men that you can’t tell if a woman has had an orgasm, but women as well. For generations, we’ve been moaning and screaming our way through it porn-style, and no one thought to point out that this shit-show is biologically impossible?
Let’s do a quick google search, shall we? According to www.everydayhealth.com, female orgasms go something like the following...
“When a female orgasms, a series of rhythmic contractions occur in the uterus, vagina, and pelvic floor muscles. The sexual tension caused by lovemaking or self-stimulation releases, and muscles throughout the body may contract.”
There it is! That physical response we’ve been talking about. Those sweet rhythmic contractions that send a body into hysterical euphoria. It’s a glorious thing, and without question, it’s physically detectable to both parties. Show me someone who says they can’t feel it, and I’ll show you a liar.
So, how is the patriarchy not overtly embarrassed by this? They tangle so much of their “masculinity” into heteronormative sex, and yet they actively encouraging each other to do it incorrectly or at the very least, not bother caring if they actually give pleasure to their partner. If you are a straight male who doesn’t know if your partner actually orgasms during sex, it’s time to have a conversation. Or if you know this is you, speak up, you need to take responsibility here as well. Sure, some women can’t orgasm during sex, and that’s OK too, there’s no shame when it comes to individual tastes, fetishes and limitations, you can’t compare your journey, but there’s always options, and I for one am keen to change the narrative.
Thinking back, the writing was on the wall when it came to women’s sexual pleasure. We’ve all seen When Harry Met Sally, or at the never least can have watched the infamous clip with Meg Ryan faking an “orgasm” in front of the entire diner, but that movie is over 30 years old now, and if women can agree to stop faking orgasms, can we all agree to stop pretending they can as well?

A quick search shows that the “beach body” or more accurately the term “bikini body” first appeared in an ad campaign for weight loss salons in 1961. Nothing of interest there. Yes, to the surprise of exactly no one, another shaming and need-inspiring concept was created by the advertising industry. But while in the ’60s and ’70s there was absolutely no ambiguity as to who was feeding the idea of how you need to renounce the habit of feeding yourself or quickly get into the habit of making up for it after you do – I mean really, when would you even find the time to eat, let alone cook, when you are supposed to pick out the perfect bathing suit for that perfect body which you also need to shape and then maintain perfectly, as hair and marks of any sort do not seem to belong on the beach – today things are not quite so clear.
If anything, quite a few brands and thus their marketing campaigns have swung to the exact opposite end of the spectrum. Each body is beautiful, each body deserves love and care. So, you know, make sure you treat yours to all our lovely products which are for everyone. Sure, target audiences are a thing but don’t let anybody fool you, there is nothing any business likes more than being for everyone. (Being “generic” is the ultimate failure, the plague of image-building, but you tell your clients how a number of the unique and very specific properties of their product pertain to different groups who shockingly manage to include anyone on the 8 to 80 spectrum – hell, throw some toddlers in there, if you can, and they will snog you in the conference room.) Of course, advertising is still not abandoning its favourite hobby of making anyone and everyone feel inadequate – there’s always something more we can be doing, something more we can have, something more we can be – but at least it is no longer pretending that women who don’t possess the desired beach body are to be found only in the shadows of their own homes, working on that dream bod.
So who have the ads passed the torch to? Because we all sure as hell know exactly what we’re talking about when someone uses that summer-bound collocation. (Spoiler alert: it’s never too flat or too curvy or anything but perfectly smooth.)
A few answers come to the forefront just off the top of my head – social media, professional influencers, our willingness to perpetuate harmful concepts long as they can help us feel superior to others. I do think it’s mostly that last one, filtered and channeled through those first two.
At this point, I doubt there is anyone who is unaware that we’re all living our best life on social media. We’re all eating healthy and hitting the gym most days of the week, we’re basically living on the beach or in front of landmarks that need no hashtag, all our bedrooms are colour-coordinated, our suitcases are #travelgoals, our friends are #cliquegoals and, of course, our bodies are #beachbodygoals. (The beach body hashtag on Instagram has over 9 million results. A surprising amount of those are pictures of muesli. Muesli apparently is really living its best life and is constantly in beach body shape.)
If you are judging by what everybody is saying, you’d think the beaches are a catwalk every summer. It’s abs, abs, abs for everyone. My hair still has sea salt in it and there must be some sand somewhere on me (the fact that I’m not even sure where but am confident it’s there is probably the most worrisome part) and let me tell you, the beach is no catwalk. It’s so much more fun than that. More than a third of the people (including myself) are not wearing matching bikini tops and bottoms, the people who are wearing one-pieces are few and I sincerely doubt most of them are doing it to hide their non-beach bodies. The beach is a gallery of uncoordinated colours and various marks – stretch marks, wrinkles, scars, pen marks from the crossword on chubby fingers, drying sugar blobs from the ice cream on slim thighs. There are just as many beer bellies as there are abs, if not more. The most fascinating thing – everybody has a body and everybody is on the beach. So… they all… have… beach bodies? Turns out those are not nearly as unified and boring as social media has made me believe.
I do not mean to dissuade anyone with the “perfect beach body” from abusing their camera roll and then their friends and followers’ feeds. I’m sure I couldn’t even if I wanted to. It’s what summer is for, what social media is for, and mostly what having a phone with a good camera is for. It’s just that at this point in history – where a lot of the media’s influence is shifting into the cumulative grasp of a large enough group of individuals, we are the ones conditioning ourselves and keeping each other in line, we’re the ones raising the expectations too high and demanding “more and better” all the time. And, frankly, none of us are muesli. We can’t always be living our best life. Sometimes we have to go for just living life and then see how well it turns out. In my experience, with an adequate mindset and expectations, it usually ends up being pretty damn good, even if not always THE BEST™.
Billboards and TV ads don’t really need to tell us what the beach body for this summer is anymore because we’ve picked up the slack and are running this operation through our own personal accounts better than they ever did. At least “professional influencers” get paid for it. The rest of us suckers? Well, there’s the ten-minute-long satisfaction of appearing somewhere near the top of the #beachbody tag. Or there could also be the ultimate satisfaction of turning the “beach body” – the bastard child of advertising, into the adopted kid of social media and making it just likes its new parent – colourful, diverse, largely flawed but, at the end of the day, including everyone.

We all know the classic fairy tales spoon-fed to us as children. Some cautionary tales, but most of them are just stories creating the foundations of unrealistic expectations and dangerous stereotypes. Lucky for us though, some incredible retellings put these tales into perspective. So if you’re in need of a little ‘happily ever after’ reconditioning, these books are for you…
